Our expert previews each race on Caulfield Cup Day including the big feature, which is Race 9 of the afternoon at 5:15pm.

Race 1 - 12:15PM KENO CLASSIC HANDICAP (1700 METRES)
GRINZINGER STAR has a peak high benchmark (BM) figure of 14.4 lengths above all BM when getting out to 2000m at this track third-up last campaign, and his best is far better than the rest here. He’s only second-up on Saturday, but he did defeat Mr Quickie at the same stage of his campaign last time in at this track over a mile. He didn’t do enough first-up when sitting behind the leader and then getting shuffled back before the turn, but he can improve out of sight on that. VIGERE looks like getting a soft lead and could prove hard to run down if they leave him alone out in front, while JENKINS looks next best.
First 4 predictions:
1st – Grinzinger Star
2nd – Vigere
3rd – Jenkins
4th – Starcaster
Race 2 - 12:50PM QMS MEDIA PLATE (1400 METRES)
I’m sticking with a Declaration Of War gelding to win the Caulfield Cup and there’s no doubt Chris Beig’s filly, TUBBY TWO TRACKS, who is by the same sire, will appreciate the step up to 1400m third-up. She jumped last at Morphettville but railed through to sit behind the leader and then started to overrace. She went 4.8 lengths above BM and now gets the services of Craig Williams who also rides my Caulfield Cup pick.
First 4 predictions:
1st – Tubby Two Tracks
2nd – Splendoronthegrass
3rd – Pretty Brazen
4th – Night Express
Race 3 - 1:25PM POLYTRACK GOTHIC STAKES (1400 METRES)
HEIRBORN may lack race fitness but looks ready for 1400m based on his 990m barrier trial at Cranbourne where he hit the line hard late in the piece. HILO will find this much easier and could bounce back and TRITON RISING has the strongest BM figures in the race.
First 4 predictions:
1st – Heirborn
2nd – Hilo
3rd – Triton Rising
4th – Lord Markel
Race 4 - 2:00PM LADBROKES CLASSIC (2000 METRES)
Blinkers go back on POWER SCHEME who was terrific first-up before disappointing in the Stutt Stakes (1600m) last start. I don’t see much between him and WARNING, but at triple the odds, I’d prefer to lean toward the former. MIAMI BOUND is favourite and must be respected, but again, her odds are too short for a horse than didn’t rate that highly last start – she’d need to improve.
First 4 predictions:
1st – Power Scheme
2nd – Warning
3rd – Miami Bound
4th – Creator

Race 5 - 2:35PM CARLTON DRAUGHT ALINGHI STAKES (1100 METRES)
PROPHET’S THUMB recorded a career high BM rating of 14.9 lengths above all BM last start at this track and trip and it’s simply hard to go past that when none of her rivals have ever recorded figures that strong. The synthetic hoof filler is used for the first time which isn’t ideal, but I’m taking her on trust. WORKING FROM HOME and SOOTHING were 2nd and 3rd in this race last year and can battle out the same placings ahead of HUMMA HUMMA.
First 4 predictions:
1st – Prophet’s Thumb
2nd – Soothing
3rd – Working From Home
4th – Humma Humma
Race 6 - 3:10PM NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK ETHEREAL STAKES (2000 METRES)
Despite lacking race fitness last start, I tipped CELESTIAL FALLS to win the Oaks Trial (1800m) and she was too good leading all the way. She meets runner-up GAMAY better at the weights and can win again. VEGAS JEWEL is a progressive daughter of Shocking and will be aiming to make it three from three, and she looms as the danger to the favourite.
First 4 predictions:
1st – Celestial Falls
2nd – Vegas Jewel
3rd – Gamay
4th – Song Brocade
Race 7 - 3:45PM MCCAFÉ CAULFIELD SPRINT (1000 METRES)
GOD OF THUNDER’s win at Rosehill three starts back rated through the roof, and he wasn’t beaten far next time at Rosehill before finishing runner-up to Humma Humma at The Valley last start. He gets in well at the weights here and finish over the top of them.
First 4 predictions:
1st – God Of Thunder
2nd – Miss Leonidas
3rd – Not Enough Effort
4th – Crystal Dreamer
Race 8 - 4:30PM LADBROKES MOONGA STAKES (1400 METRES)
ROYAL MEETING went from a maiden win on debut to a Group 1 win over 1400m at his next start, and any horse that can do that is a serious racehorse. This looks a great kick off point for his Australian debut, and he may just have a class edge on them.
First 4 predictions:
1st – Royal Meeting
2nd – Tom Melbourne
3rd – Land Of Plenty
4th – Terbium
Race 9 - STELLA ARTOIS CAULFIELD CUP (2400 METRES)

First 4 predictions:
1st – Vow And Declare
2nd – Mer De Glace
3rd – Gold Mount
4th – Hartnell

Race 10 - 5:50PM SCHWEPPES TRISTARC STAKES (1400 METRES)
Barrier 11 has made things awkward for POHUTUKAWA but she still rates a strong chance to figure in the money. However, I’ve gone with the Chris Waller-trained INVINCIBELLA who has drawn the inside gate and also may not be suited by the draw. She got too far back first-up, but with that run under the belt, I’m hopeful she can hold a more forward position over the same trip.
First 4 predictions:
1st – Invincibella
2nd – Pohutukawa
3rd – Krone
4th – Naantali
