Doomben Tips August 14 | Our best selections for Doomben Wednesday

  • One at double-figures looks overs
  • Chris Munce gelding looking for the hat-trick today
Doomben racing Wednesday

Plenty of maidens on the card today but our focus is on later races where I like one from the Chris Munce stable and another at big each-way odds.

Race 5 - 2:53PM CAPTAIN MORGAN Class 2 Handicap (1110 METRES)
I’m kicking off the day with one at big odds and is well worth an each-way ticket. Trained at Toowoomba by John Dann, WATCHMEN does come under notice here and is second-up off a 24-week spell. First-up on his home track, although well beaten, he did finish third behind Real Patriot in a Class 2 over the 870m sprint. That was a solid effort after six months in the paddock. Attention is drawn to his previous preparation where his last race (prior to that spell) saw him win a Class 2 over 1200m at Ipswich. He did it tough after jumping awkwardly, forcing Justin Stanley to push forward and lead. He held on well to claim the victory. The David Vandyke-trained Skins is clearly the big danger, unbeaten in two starts. However, he is coming off a Class 1 victory at Ipswich and has to deal with the class rise. Watchmen has drawn well in gate seven and should be sitting just off the pace. Jackson Murphy is legged aboard for the first time which (in my eyes) is a bonus. Murphy has proven himself to be an accomplished rider and with a 2kg claim here, meets Skins 3kgs better. He may not be the best horse in the race but he certainly has a resume worth considering and in a 12-horse field looks way overs in this company, currently $26 and $6.50 with Bet365, and is capable of showing up.

Race 8 - 4:38PM BRC SPRING RACING CARNIVAL BenchMark 70 Handicap (1350 METRES)
Now to the pick of the day where the Chris Munce-trained STAMPE is shooting for the hat-trick today. The three-year-old hit his straps third-up this time in when a close-up second at Ipswich in a two-year-old Class 2 over 1200m. That sparked Munce to try his luck in town where he then lined up in a similar race at the Gold Coast. The task was a little harder there but in the small field, he sat outside the leader most of the way and finished best to win the 1200m event in 1:09. He then franked that form by winning his first raced as a three-year-old over 1350m at Doomben carrying 59kgs. Sean Cormack remains aboard and is shooting for his third win on the gelding. He draws the fence today and if he reproduces last start’s effort, he will prove mighty hard to hold out here.
