Grafton Cup Tips - strong hand for Laming

Cranbourne-based trainer Richard Laming saddles up two strong chances in Thursday’s Grafton Cup (2350m) at Grafton.

He Ekscels is equal second favourite at $6 and comes off two strong victories including a last start win over the in-form So You Win who was aiming for a hat-trick.

He Ekscels led throughout and was clearly headed by So You Win before fighting back on the line and getting the nod.

The step up in trip look ideal from him, and his last start effort where he went 5.9 lengths above benchmark (BM) is the strongest last start figure in the race.

Lamings’s other chance, No Money No Honey, went five lengths above BM last start when finishing 3rd behind Fuji Fury and Ombudsman on a Heavy 10 over 2400m on Randwick’s Kensington track.

Although He Ekscels produced the higher BM rating last start, he now has to carry 4kg more while No Money No Honey stays at the same weight.

Unlike He Ekscels who dominated from the front, No Money No Honey likes to settle at the rear and come with a booming finish.

He looked the winner half-way down the straight last time but was outstayed in the final 100m, but that was his first go at 2400m and I’d expect him to be strong through the line over 2350m on a Soft 6 track this time.

He Ekscels and Sopressa should ensure a solid tempo here, and that will also suit No Money No Honey as he tries to swoop down the 400m straight at Grafton.

Caloundra Cup winner Igraine is the $3.40 favourite and was clearly the supreme Heavy tracker last start, but he now goes up 5kg on a firmer track and meets Sopressa and Exoteric worse at the weights.

He looks too short in the market and the value lies with No Money No Honey at double-figure odds.
