Hong Kong Vase Tips - Prince Of Arran draws wide but has the form to win

Steve Bennett in Free Tips 6 Dec 2018
Hong Kong contender - Prince Of Arran

He drew the car park in the Melbourne Cup and his luck with barrier draws continued in Hong Kong when Prince Of Arran came up with gate 14 of 14 in the Group One Hong Kong Vase (2400m) to be run on Sunday.

Despite drawing poorly here, the six-year-old gelding is in outstanding form of late, highlighted by his outstanding third place finish in this year’s Melbourne Cup, where he jumped from barrier 20 in the 24 strong field.

The son of Shirocco hit his first Australian track after finishing second at his last start in England, four months prior to arriving in Melbourne.

His first-up effort was quite solid where he finished third behind Yucatan in the Group Two Herbert Power Handicap (2400m).

He then gained entry into the Melbourne Cup by winning the Group Three Lexus Stake (2500m).

His effort to finish third behind Cross Counter in the Melbourne Cup was outstanding, backing-up from the Lexus run three days prior.

The Charlie Fellowes stable have reported that the horse travelled well and is in top condition for Sunday’s event.

This year’s Hong Kong Vase is quite an open affair with several horses staking strong claims including Waldgeist lining up a winner of four of his past six starts.

James McDonald will ride Latrobe who comes here as runner-up in the Group One Irish St. Leger and then finished second in the Group One McKinnon Stakes at his only Australian start.

Eagle Way looks the best local chance coming off a convincing win in the Group Two Bochk Jockey Club Cup (2000m), beating home Exultant and Werther who will miss a start here due to injury.

Australian jockey Michael Walker rode Prince Of Arran a treat in his three Australian races and with his experience and knowledge of the horse, I expect him to adopt similar tactics here and ride him quietly to the turn then let him loose and try to stave off the late challenges.

At double figure odds, he represents great value here.
