Ipswich racing Friday (PA Images)

It’s a lightning fast track today and I’m running with a Ben Ahrens-trained gelding who looks perfectly placed.

Race 6 - 3:57PM CRIME STOPPERS BenchMark 62 Handicap (1100 METRES)
In a race riddled with scratchings, we still have enough for three dividends and although a beaten favourite last start, I’m sticking with KING OF THE DESERT to bounce back here and make amends. Two starts back, he broke his maiden status at the Gold Coast, finishing too good for his rivals that day. Then last start, punters were banking on him franking that maiden form at Beaudesert against BM60 company, only to be disappointed when he could only manage second prize in a tight finish with Capital City over 1100m. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but had Matthew Palmer remained behind Capital City that day, chances are he would have won the race. He pulled out three-wide before the turn and did a lot of work to get around Clickety Clicks (sitting second at the time), and got to within a neck of Capital City on the line. The 4kgs weight difference told in the end. Today, he has a similar issue to deal with, namely, conceding weight to his main rivals, however it is less than his last start, plus he jumps from the inside gate (after scratchings) and will have the opportunity to take the sit behind the early pace again, and save his best for the run home. Ryan Wiggins is reunited with the four-year-old today and together, they should prove to be the ones to run down.
