Ipswich Tips September 11 - Two great chances for today

Steve Bennett in Free Tips 10 Sep 2019
  • Denman mare looks to breaking her maiden today
  • Gollan-trained gelding in easier company here
Ipswich racing Wednesday (PA Images)

I like a mare at double-figures who is trying to break her maiden today and a Tony Gollan gelding who looks a stand-out.

Race 3 - 2:18PM CARLTON MID Maiden Handicap (1200 METRES)
A lightly-raced four-year-old, DENCH has been knocking on the door of late and here she looks a solid each-way chance to break through. Nicely bred, by Denman out of a Fastnet Rock mare, the four-year-old has had just the eight starts and finished in the minor money three times. Owned and trained by Charlie Weston at Beaudesert, she had the blows here three starts back ($9-$17) but still took second prize that day behind Lady Appleton over the 1100m. Then she took on city maidens at Doomben where she finished mid-field over the longer 1350m journey. Last start, she was unwanted again in the market but bounced back to finish runner-up at the Sunshine Coast, chasing race favourite Melbern Queens all the way to the line. Weston has put the blinkers back on today and leading rider Michael Cahill is back aboard for his second ride on the mare. Drawn nicely in gate four, she looks great each-way value in early markets.

Odds correct as at 7:30AM (AEST) on 11/09/2019

Race 5 - 3:28PM RAY WHITE IPSWICH Class 3 Handicap (1350 METRES)
The Tony Gollan-trained SIX SIGMA has hit the ground running since resuming and looks ideally placed here to continue the good work. Bred for speed, the Pierro gelding came off a 14-week spell and proved too good for a Class 3 field at Doomben over 1200m, running the trip in 1:09 first-up. Last start, he stepped up to the 1400m at Eagle Farm and beat all but Red Chase and Say I Cee You home, finding those two a little too smart on the day. This looks easier, coming off two city runs and he comes in well at the weights as well after Nick Keal’s claim where he will carry just 56.5kgs. He should take a power of beating in this field.
