Mackay Tips April 16 - Our best selections for Mackay Tuesday

  • Suggested Stake: 2 Units to win on No Finer Jet , 3 Units to win on Nadeem Spirit
Mackay racing Tuesday

The track is set fair for all at a Good 4 today and on what appears to be a tough day at the office, I like a Jet Spur mare who is in good form and looks the goods at the weights, plus a locally-trained mare who can go back-to-back.

Race 6 - 4:45PM BOOK FUNCTIONS IN EVENT CENTRE Class 3 Plate (1300 METRES)
Three or four chances stand out here who all have different claims to victory so I always look to the weight factor when trying to sort out a winner and its no different with this field. Glenda Bell’s mare NO FINER JET looks well placed here and after Elyce Smith’s claim is certainly the pick at the weights. She’s been a model of consistency this preparation with top-three finishes at three of her four starts, highlighted by back-to-back victories. The Jet Spur mare resumed from a seven-week break and put paid to a class 1 in Townsville over 1200m then followed that up with a victory in a class 3 at Emerald. Last start she visited the Ooralea track at Mackay for the second time and she was far from disgraced in finishing third that day. They went like the wind up front and while sitting comfortably on the fence (mid-field), she was spotting the leaders at least six lengths on the turn and in the end, did a great job to finish within 1.5 lengths of the winner. Just an 11-day turnaround here and the extra trip (as well as the weight relief) gives her a few extra ticks. She looks the best value in the field.

Race 7 - 5:20PM AMATEUR RACEDAY 25TH MAY Ratings Band 0 - 55 Handicap (1200 METRES)
The Olivia Cairns-trained gelding NADEEM SPIRIT looks ideally placed here and should prove hard to hold out. The Nadeem gelding resumed from a nine-month break finishing top three at his first two starts. His second placing three starts back on this track was outstanding. Missing the start, Brad Pengelly had to push on to keep in touch with them, but had to travel three-deep in the process. Pengelly then had to come down the centre of the track to make his run and although looking the winner at 100m mark, he ran out of juice and was grabbed on the line, left to take home second prize. He returned here to his home track last start and made amends, comfortably beating home a class 2 field of 12 over 1300m with Justin Stanley in the saddle. Stanley remains aboard here and although up in weight, faces a much easier task against this field. With a trouble-free run here, he will prove hard to beat again.
