MORNINGTON

Race 3 - 2:10pm Turn Key Hotel Furniture Plate (1500m)
The Tony Vasil-trained MOSHEBA looks to have ability and I’m confident she can break her maiden today at Mornington. She has been unlucky with the horses she bumped into last preparation. She saw the back of Amphitrite on debut at Kyneton, she then ran fourth behind Multaja at Werribee before failing on a heavy track behind Mirette at Bendigo. She has been terrific this preparation, narrowly missing first-up behind Steamboat Sally who has since been placed in Metro grade. She wasn’t suited staying at 1200m second-up at Sandown. She was outsprinted at the top of the straight but finally got going the last 100m, running the third fastest last 200m split and the third fastest 400m-200m split of the race. The main danger looks the Darren Weir-trained Countess de Galvez. She is fourth-up for Weir and gets the Blinkers on first-up. If you can forgive her last start effort at Tereng where she got too far back then she does look right in the game. In saying this, I’m happy to back Mosheba and quinella her with Countess de Galvez.

MOONEE VALLEY

Race 3 - 7:30pm MSC Signs Plate (1200m)
If the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained GOLDIFOX is anywhere near her best, she should be winning this race. The daughter of Foxwedge produced terrific figures, running close-up seconds behind Anjana and Good ‘n’ Fast. The word from the Corstens stable is that her work indicates that she’ll be “breaking her duck”. Jockey Stephen Baster goes on board for the first time, which could indicate that she will roll further forward than her normal pattern. Her two main dangers in the betting Angel Lass and Sora both come out of the Sandown maiden won by My Pendent. They have race fitness on their side but neither has shown tactical speed to lead and control a race, which is what would be needed to beat Goldifox here. With even luck, she should simply be winning this.
