At Newcastle today, a Reward For Effort mare is well placed to bring up her hat-trick while at Grafton, I found a five-year-old gelding shooting for back-to-back victories.

NEWCASTLE

Race 7 - 5:02PM ROBERT THOMPSON CUP- BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
Andrew Robinson’s mare TROPHIES GALORE has hit the ground running since resuming from five months in the paddock and remains unbeaten this preparation. The Reward For Effort mare was full of running when first-up over 1000m at Muswellbrook. She carried 60kgs to victory that day. Last start, she franked that win by stepping up in grade and beat home her Class 3 rivals over 1300m on this track. She drops back in grade here and is ideally drawn. Already a winner third-up, she will take a ton of beating here.

GRAFTON

Race 7 - 4:45PM RAGING RED TIMBERS OPEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
All boxes look ticked for GOLDEN COMET to go back-to-back here today. Fresh off a 19-week spell, the five-year-old showed a solid turn of foot in the run home to win the Jacaranda Prelude first-up. He drew wide that day but overcame that disadvantage to win going away in the end. Five of his six wins have come on dry tracks and with a Good 3 today, he should be right at home here. Jockey Jeff Kehoe has ridden the horse in all 17 of his starts and remains aboard again today. From gate six, he should fins a forward sit and prove hard to hold out second-up.
