Racing is at Port Macquarie on Friday October 11 for the Port Macquarie Cup (2000m) and there are eight races on the programme.

The track is rated a Good 4 but there is a chance of showers at the venue. Here are our best bets for the day.

Race 5 - 3:55PM BIRDON GROUP SPRINT (1200 METRES)
Race 5 at Port Macquarie is the Birdon Group Sprint and SPRING CHARLIE should be hard to beat. The Kim Waugh-trained galloper resumes after a 22 week break and seems to thrive when first up, having won two from three, while finishing runner-up in another. The son of Myboycharlie is compiling a good record of five wins from his 11 career starts and at his last campaign he tackled the $150,000 Hawkesbury Provincial Championship Qualifier when fresh. He charged to the lead in the final 200m of that race but may have gone for home a fraction too early when pipped on the post by Safado. There was big gap back to 3rd in that race. Later on in that campaign he just missed out in the $500,000 Provincial Championships (1400m) at Randwick. He comes to Port Macquarie and will be asked to carry a hefty weight but he has a class edge and has tuned up with two winning trials. He looks to be the one.

Race 7 - 5:10PM 2019 CARLTON DRAUGHT PORT MACQUARIE CUP (2000 METRES)
The Port Macquarie Cup brings together some handy types as they do battle for $200,000 worth of prize money for connections and it is the Kris Lees-trained ALIFEROUS that can make her mark at the each-way quote. The stable have targeted this race and have three runners engaged. Aliferous has drawn widest of the three stable runners and will need an ounce of luck but she is likely to get back and pace should come from the likes of Rapido Chaparro and Zaunkong. The daughter of Hinchinbrook produced some strong performances over the distance range in the autumn, finishing runner-up in the Group 2 Roses (2000m) at Doomben before running 3rd behind Mr Quickie in the Queensland Derby. She has had two runs this time in, improving to run 5th at Randwick behind Junipal at her latest. She should be nearing her peak at her third run back and the step to the 2000m is ideal.
