Pakenham Tips July 23- Vegas can get the win at Pakenham

Pakenham

I was very keen on the first two favourites Punkzy and Our Crown Jewels but with the news this morning that the Polytrack has been powered harrowed to 100mm to blend the surface together in an attempt to reduce kickback, I can’t pile into anything odds on.

It is reported that the track will play slower than previous meetings and with some rain and plenty of wind around this afternoon, I’m expecting the conditions to be testing.

Race 3 - 1:30pm O’Connor Australia Maiden Plate (1600m)
Trainer Colin Little scratched his horse Peko from a race on the Polytrack on Sunday, labeling the kickback as unsafe. Since then the track has been harrowed and he has entered his progressive two-year-old VEGAS KNIGHT in race three. He was unsuited in a strong metro race on debut at Sandown over 1200m behind Can’t Be Done and King Of Hastings. He raced here at Pakenham last start over 1400m and I thought his run to finish third behind Noble Fight and In Her Dreams was full of merit. He showed nice speed out of the gates but didn’t appreciate when Noble Fight crossed him to settle outside leader and the pace dropped. He got his head in the air and raced ungenerously for 400m-600m until Beau Mertens eased him out three wide. When asked for an effort, he didn’t pick up straight away and looked like he was going to run near last when horses like Igniting loomed up on his outside but he really fought to the line, running the second-fastest last 200m of the race and was strong through the line. The tongue tie goes on for the first time and he looks perfectly suited here third-up over a mile. The switch from barrier five to barrier nine should suit, as will the jockey change from Beau Mertens to Teo Neugent. The danger is the favourite Wiseman, who was strong through the line last start but I’m questioning the strength of that formline and he is likely to get back from barrier four with Andrew Mallyon on board, which isn’t a great recipe for success.
