PB Lawrence Stakes Tips - $31 chance is a value Place option

  • Mystic Journey the horse to beat but too short in the market.
  • Value lies with $31 chance for the Place

The spring carnival is just around the corner and as usual, the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) has attracted some quality spring players as they resume from a break.

The $200,000 feature has attracted five Group 1 winners in Hartnell, Harlem, Trap For Fools, Kenedna and Mystic Journey, as well as dual Group 2 winners Cliffs Edge and Fifty Stars.

Neufbosc and Semari will be looking for at least 2400m to show their best and Mr Marathon Man is rock-hard-fit but faces a steep class rise and would need to lift on recent efforts.

Sikandarabad will also be looking for 2000m later, but he’s run well fresh in the past and looked good defeating Neufbosc and Gailo Chop in a recent barrier trial.

Mystic Journey could be the next superstar in racing, and her win in the All-Star Mile (1600m) when caught three wide without cover for the trip was that of a an exceptionally good horse.

She carried 5kg less than Hartnell in the All-Star Mile which was undoubtedly both horse’s main target, and Mystic Journey now meets Hartnell 2.5kg worse off at the weights as she only gets a 2.5kg pull on him.

On previous times over 1400m at Caulfield, Mystic Journey won in a time of 1:23.33 on a Good 3, while Hartnell’s latest efforts at the track and trip have been a 3rd placing (beaten one length) behind Alizee in the Futurity Stakes in 1:22.48 on a Good 3, a 2nd placing in this race last year in 1:23.67 on a Good 4, and win in the CF Orr Stakes in 1:24.79 on a Good 3.

Hartnell was second-up when posting his quick time last preparation, and I doubt he go get near that first-up this time judging by his trials.

Mystic Journey posted her best effort with a month between runs after finishing 5th at Moonee Valley, but she’s gone to a new level since then.

She missed her initial first-up target which was to be the Bletchingly Stakes, and that’s given trainer Adam Trinder a bit longer to tune her up for her fresh run.

Regular rider Anthony Darmanin should give her the softest of runs from gate 2, and if she’s 80 percent wound up, she should be winning.

Cliffs Edge was supported late when first-up, and the stable indicated he would need the run, so he could be the improver and has a bit of a fitness edge.

Sikandarabad finished 2.2 lengths from Rock ‘n’ Gold when first-up at the track and trip last campaign, and then he was runner-up to Avilius second-up in the Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield.

He went into last preparation without a public trial but has won a 1190m trial at Cranbourne heading into this.

He came from second last in the trial and snuck up the inside to take the lead from Gailo Chop while Neufbosc sailed down the outside under riding to grab 2nd.

In my opinion, Sikandarabad trialled best and I’m keen to have a save on him in the PB Lawrence at the massive odds of $31.

He’s $5.90 to Place with Ladbrokes, and we must remember his 2nd placing to Avilius second-up last campaign – Avilius would be much shorter in this market.
