One of his runners, Raqeeq, has caught the eye in two recent runs and looks set to peak with five runs under his belt this campaign.

At his sixth run from a spell last preparation, the son of Champs Elysees went from BM80 grade to BM89 and scored over 2000m at Rosehill.

At his third run this time in, Raqeeq stepped up to 2000m and finished 3rd behind Free Fly Too who had a distinct fitness advantage and Bajan Gold who carried 8.5kg less.

He then finished 43 lengths from Free Fly Too at Scone over 2200m and was suspended for the poor performance but was reinstated following a satisfactory barrier trial.

Jockey Glyn Schofield stated that Raqeeq had refused to stretch out after copping interference on the home turn which caused him to strike the running rail.

Raqeeq then went to Randwick and settled worse than midfield, and as he started to build momentum in the straight he ran into a dead end and had to switch course and build again.

His effort to finish a length from Wolfe who made it back-to-back wins was full of merit, and he now drops back in class slightly while apprentice Sam Weatherly’s 1.5kg claim gets him in with half a kilogram more than he carried last start.

The favourite for Wednesday’s event, Loveisili, clocked quicker time at Hawkesbury over 2100m, but the damage was done early for Raqeeq and he actually came home nine lengths quicker in his final 600m.

I’m anticipating Raqeeq and Loveisili will balance up together around midfield, and with peak fitness and a superior turn of foot to his advantage, Raqeeq can finish best to score.
