At least you know what you’ll get from the Dan O’Sullivan-trained Captain Crackerjak who resumes in Race 6, the Hygain Winners Choice BM58 Handicap (1000m) on the Ballarat synthetic track.

The six-year-old son of Captain Gerrard will jump and go fast and try and hold on – and I think he can.

He’s yet to be tested on the Ballarat synthetic but does have generally good form on synthetic tracks and he’s trained at Ballarat and sure to have been on this surface many times for work.

And a look at his last three first-up runs suggests he goes best fresh and must be respected on Tuesday.

First-up last preparation he was nailed near the line by the classy All Too Royal who went on to win four and finish runner-up in two of his next six starts - that pair beat the rest by five lengths.

In the previous campaign, he tackled an 1100m BM70 first-up and was only beaten two lengths while he also beat home Inn Keeper who had won three in a row before that and won four in a row after that.

Inn Keeper was far from his best and was spelled, but Captain Crackerjak wasn’t suited first-up over 1100m when he struggles to run 1000m most times.

And the preparation before that, he won a BM64 over 1000m at Bendigo beating some handy types.

Lucinda Doodt knows the horse better than anyone and should be full of confidence having booted home two winners in her past three rides.

First-up last preparation, Captain Crackerjak went 5.7 lengths above benchmark (BM), and no horse in this race has figures anywhere near that.

As long as O’Sullivan has got him forward enough, Captain Crackerjak will prove hard to catch on Tuesday.
