Racing Bet of the Day August 15 - well-named horse to strike at Sale

Aaron Hamilton in Free Tips 15 Aug 2019
  • Confidence rating: 75%
  • Suggested stake: 1 unit Each-Way

For obvious reasons, I was enticed to look at the form of Alexander Hamilton as he goes around in Race 5, the Ladbrokes Odds Boost Maiden Plate (2238m) at Sale on Thursday.

He’s an $11 chance and faces David Brideoake’s Shepard who posted the strongest last start benchmark (BM) figure when going 0.9 of a length below BM as he finished 2nd to No Effort on debut over 1600m.

That pair fought out the finish and went nine lengths clear of the rest of the field, and No Effort has well and truly franked the form with a BM58 win over 2075m and then a BM70 win over 2060m.

It’s been a month between runs for Shepard, and while he’s clearly the one to beat, I’m willing to take him on at the short price of $1.80.

Mornington-based trainer Rachael Frost picked up Alexander Hamilton from New Zealand following two unplaced efforts over 1200m, and after having him for just three weeks, she tested him at Flemington in an 1800m two-year-old handicap.

He finished 6.8 lengths from Lindsay Park’s Sebring colt Huntley Castle who made it two in a row, but the performance was far better than it looked.

Alexander Hamilton was last throughout, and as he tried to make a run on the bend, he was blocked everywhere he went.

He finally got clear late and started to pass a few, and it was obvious he was already looking for more ground.

He now steps up to 2238m and gets the long Sale straight to work with, and this is a significant class drop yet he drops half a kilogram.

His dam, Anna Kaye, was a winner over 2000m on a Heavy 11 in New Zealand, so staying was certainly not an issue for her.

And the sire, Redwood, is a prolific producer of stayers with the likes of Night’s Watch and Rising Red being among some of the better performed progeny.

Alexander Hamilton has obviously shown Frost enough to warrant going to Flemington for his Australian debut, but Thursday’s assignment look far more suitable and he represents value at double-figure odds.
