Racing Bet of the Day September 9 - short Wodonga straight to suit Warrior

Aaron Hamilton in Free Tips 9 Sep 2019
Confidence rating: 95%
Suggested stake: 4 units to Win

Race fitness and the short Wodonga straight should see the Peter Gelagotis-trained Taikun Warrior prove hard to beat in Race 7, the Elgas Wodonga BM58 Handicap (1590m) on Monday.

The five-year-old son of Written Tycoon broke through for his maiden win when leading all the way to score by 3.8 lengths at Mornington on a Soft 5 at his sixth run from a spell.

He just missed out at his fifth run when trying to lead all the way, scored at his sixth and was beaten less than a length when stepping up in grade at his seventh run from a spell when also trying to lead throughout.

With two runs over 1400m and 1500m under his belt this campaign, jockey Jason Maskiell took him to the front last start and really had to work to get there which softened him up late as the Lindsay Park pair, Hadeer and Friday Funday, pounced after softer runs behind the speed.

However, that run would have topped Taikun Warrior off, and with the 230m straight at Wodonga often suited front-runners, I’m expecting him to prove hardest to catch in what looks a moderate affair.

Villicana is second favourite but will find this much tougher than the Bm50 he won last start, and although Freedoms scored impressively over a mile on the Pakenham synthetic four runs back, Taikun Warrior went six lengths quicker at that track and trip last start and has plenty more upside.

Taikun Warrior should find the front without too much trouble from gate 2, and if he gets left alone in front, I can’t see anything running him down.
