The John and Chris Meagher-trained Arctic Shock is clearly the class runner in Race 7, the Highview Accounting Mornington Hcp (1500m) at Mornington on Thursday, and she should get the race run to suit.

The four-year-old daughter of Shocking was beaten less than half a length by Princess Jenni in the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes (1600m) at The Valley last campaign, and that form reads extremely well for a BM64 at Mornington on Thursday.

She did enough first-up over 1300m when finishing 2nd to a rock-hard-fit Cuban Toonite, but she was always going to improve on that and appreciate getting out in trip.

Her two best performances to date where when going 6.7 lengths above benchmark (BM) in the Alexandra Stakes and then 4.3 lengths above (BM) in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m), and the two things those races had in common were fast early tempos where the leaders had gone 5.1 and 8.0 lengths above BM to the 600m.

On Thursday, the John McArdle-prepared Saucy Jack is the likely leader, and in his five most recent runs over 1500m or longer, he’s gone 7.0, 9.3, 7.2, 0.3 and 3.8 lengths above BM to the 600m.

That suggests Arctic Shock will get the early speed she needs to run on and finish over the top of them as she steps out to 1500m at her second run this time in.

Ben Melham sticks with her and will need a thoughtful ride from gate 12, and Melham has had great success with the stable lately and has booted two of their horses home among his past six winners.
