Team Hawkes saddle up Flying Elsie in Race 9, the 3GG VRC Grand Handicap Ballot Exempt Race 4 (1000m), and I expect her to lead all the way.

The four-year-old daughter of Sepoy has had three jumpouts at Flemington in preparation for her first-up assignment, and she has improved with each and was ultra-impressive in her most recent piece of work.

She pounced to a two-length lead and was in cruise control throughout as she gapped her rivals who were under pressure to make ground but couldn’t.

One of those rivals included Phaistos who was a Rosehill winner and Flemington placegetter before going for a break.

First-up last campaign, Enjoy Elsie scored a four-length win over 1000m at Wyong in slick time (0:57.64) for a Soft 6 track.

And with Moe rated a Soft 6 on Thursday, she gets what looks like ideal conditions.

Gate 1 is a big advantage with her natural early speed, and jockey James Winks just needs to rate her well out in front and then release the handbrake on the bend before letting rip down the short Moe straight.
