A strong last start performance, peak fitness and longer straight makes the Jason Warren-trained Saint Katarina the best bet at Seymour on Thursday.

The daughter of Snitzel went 0.8 lengths above benchmark (BM) last start which rates three lengths better than the favourite, The Boy Wonder, who went 2.1 lengths below BM last start.

The Boy Wonder has upside and should improve over longer, but there are a few things that have me leaning toward Saint Katarina.

Saint Katarina ran the equal 10th quickest final 200m of the meeting (11.88) with only horses competing over 1100m and 1450m going quicker for the final split.

Her race was run at a Fast to Very Fast tempo early so it’s not as if they walked early and sprinted quick late.

She was held up on the inside and had to switch to the outside last start before really attacking the line late where the short 220m straight at Tatura played against her as the leaders were full of running and had established a winning break.

Without any doubt, if she had built momentum on the turn and had clear running from the top of the straight, she would have won and won easily.

The 380m straight at Seymour will suit much better.

The Boy Wonder also comes off a fast run race and his 600m, 400m and 200m sectionals over 1600m are inferior to Saint Katarina’s who ran over 1980m.

The quick early tempo may have taken a bit out of him second-up as he gave his all for the entire straight, while Saint Katerina has peak fitness on her side being sixth-up, and she only got clear late so should have plenty left in the tank for Thursday’s assignment.

Friday Funday also looms as a danger but has had every chance in a few runs this time in, and he seems a bit one-paced and I can’t have him over Saint Katarina whose sharp turn of foot will be an advantage here.
