Racing Bet of the Day December 7 - City to score at Mornington

Aaron Hamilton in Free Tips 6 Dec 2018
  • Confidence rating: 90%
  • Suggested stake: 2 units to win

Three stayers rate well above their opposition in Race 2, the Sphere Accountants and Advisors Plate (2400m) at Mornington on Friday, and confidence is high in City Chap getting the job done.

Of the three horses I have rated clearly on top, City Chap and Mishmash finished 2nd and 3rd behind Danluca over 2446m at Moe last start, while Rakau Whero finished 4th behind For Pete's Sake over 1800m at Sandown.

Rakau Whero is a bold front-running type who tried to lead all the way over 1600m two starts back at Moonee Valley and was run down late by Beetobee and Maclairey.

He then tried to lead again at Sandown and was beaten 2.75 lengths – and Maclairey finished further in front of him over the longer trip.

He now steps up to 2400m and looks the obvious pacesetter, but will he be a bunny for City Chap and Mishmash who will be finishing strong late and are proven over this trip?

Mishmash is rock-hard-fit with seven runs under his belt including his last three starts over 2400m.

He clearly headed City Chap in the straight last time until that runner fought back to grab 2nd place.

City Chap was fifth-up from a spell and was stepping up from 2000m to 2400m for the first time, which was a tough ask considering his first go at the trip was in a highweight race with 68.5kg.

He now drops 10kg – as does Mishmash – but I think City Chap will take the most benefit out of last start and he can again finish in front of Mishmash.

If Rakau Whero starts to paddle over the concluding stages – and I think he will – City Chap will be there to pounce with Jamie Mott getting every inch out of him in the straight.
