The Matt Cumani-trained Sirius Deal was a good thing beaten last start and now gets his chance to atone in Race 4, the Polytrack Maiden Plate (2200m) at Ballarat on Tuesday.

He’s yet to be tested on the Ballarat synthetic, but Cumani’s horses get plenty of work on the surface with Ballarat being their home base, and of Cumani’s last six winners, five have been on the synthetic surface.

Sirius Deal showed little in his first two runs this preparation but was then gelded and had an eight-week break.

He returned with an average effort over 1600m before being heavily supported next start over 1800m where he was backed from $14 to $5.

Jockey Samuel Payne was aboard and had Sirius Deal six wide on the first bend before easing back and sitting in last place – but still three wide.

When it was just about time to start building momentum, Payne eased back a little more and went to the rail to try and save ground, but the horse was held up on the bend when he was absolutely bolting and in need of clear running.

He tried to angle clear at the 200m but got put back in a pocket by the eventual runner-up Sweetgeorgia Brown while the long overdue Scarface Romeo broke through for the win.

The form out of that race has been franked with Sweetgeorgia Brown winning her next start and then finishing 2nd to Hello My Friend at Warrnambool.

In my opinion, Sirius Deal should have clearly beaten that pair last start, and as long as he’s forward enough with four weeks between runs, he should be winning on Tuesday.

Jordan Childs takes the ride from barrier 4, and I can see the pair sitting a bit closer in the run before finishing best late.
