Peter Moody looks to have found a nice type in French-import Caffrey who lines up for his second career start in Race 7, the XXXX Gold BM64 Handicap (1400m) at Pakenham on Tuesday.

Hand selected by Moody and trained by David Brideoake, the three-year-old grey colt was heavily supported on debut over 1200m on the Ballarat synthetic and finished powerfully to win 3.25 lengths.

The overall race time (1:13.27) was two lengths quicker than Starspangledmagic who won the previous event, and it was two lengths slower than El Phoenix who won the BM64 later on the card, but his sectionals tell the tale.

Caffrey went 11.70, 11.54 and 12.34 in his 200m splits from the 600m while El Phoenix recorded 11.72, 11.64 and 12.22 for the same sectionals.

Jockey Clayton Douglas was kind to his mount closer to the line and he could have gone marginally quicker, while his condition probably gave out slightly and he’ll take great improvement from the run.

His sire, Kendargent, is a prolific producer of black type winners that have excelled from 1400m to 1800m, and this big, rangy type should appreciate the step up in trip at his second start.

Barrier 9 of 10 is tricky but Honeysuckle Choice should string them out and ensure a good tempo which will help Douglas find a place to slot in before winding Caffrey up on the bend and into the straight.
