After scoring impressively for us last Friday on the seven-day back-up, four-year-old gelding Campobasso lines up at Cranbourne on Wednesday in Race 8, the Mercedes-Benz Mornington BM70 Handicap (1600m).

The son of Roc De Cambes had previously posted strong figures on Heavy ground which is why I tipped him two starts back.

Unfortunately, Bendigo was upgraded from a Heavy 8 to a Soft 5 where Campobasso lost his advantage but still battled gamely to be beaten 1.4 lengths by Sierra Zulu who made it two wins in a row.

Campobasso was backed from $9 to $4 last start, settled in a perfect position for new rider Billy Egan, came six and seven wide on the bend and hit the front at the top of the straight, and despite getting there early, he was powering through the line to score convincingly.

Previously with Michael Hickmott, Campobasso was transferred to Michael’s brother Robert Hickmott before his last win.

Robert is a strong conditioner of horses, and if he’s backing Campobasso up again, it’s because the horse is a good doer and needs the extra racing to bring him to his top.

Egan retains the ride which also looks a good push considering the Patrick Payne-trained Casa De Lago is in the race and Egan has ridden her in four of her last five runs including a win on a Heavy 10 two starts back.

Campobasso’s last start benchmark (BM) figures read well as he was the third best performed horse on the day behind Rainbow Thief and Rube Bridges.

Due to Hickmott’s placement, I think this horse still has some upside, and from barrier 5, Egan should be looking to ride a similar race to last start where he scouted wide on the turn and finished best on the outside.
