Ramornie Handicap Tips - Hickman to Strike in Grafton showpiece

Warwick Farm-based horseman Gregory Hickman heads into Wednesday’s Ramornie Handicap (1200m) with his charge, Top Striker, hitting career best form.

The seven-year-old son of High Chaparral stormed to victory at Rosehill Gardens last start as he swooped from last place on the turn to defeat Goldfinch and Heart Conquered.

That performance over 1100m on the Heavy 9 rated 10.6 lengths above benchmark (BM), and a replication of that effort would see Top Striker winning on Wednesday.

The only horses in the Ramornie field that have gone close to those figures are race favourite Care To Think when he was runner-up to Crack Me Up in the Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Randwick going 10.8 lengths above BM, and Bon Amis, Cradle Mountain and Albumin who are all scratched.

Care To Think didn’t fire at this level last campaign, and although he’s had two nice barrier trials in preparation for this, I’d prefer to be with a rock-hard-fit sprinter on the testing Soft 7 with the long 400m straight at Grafton.

Hickman has stated Top Striker is a bit of a handful and has a mind of his own, but if he turns up and wants to put in, he looks hard to beat.

He went 6.6 lengths above BM when winning first-up at Randwick over 1200m, and he didn’t seem to handle the Kensington track next start when being beaten 3.4 lengths.

He then bounced back and improved at his next two starts before running a personal best (PB) last start after a four-week freshen-up.

Top Striker clearly handles Soft to Heavy ground, he’s drawn perfectly in barrier 4, and he’s at peak fitness coming off a PB.

At double figure odds, Tops Striker looks the way to play.

Care To Think, Keen Array, Haunted, Whypeeo and raining Ramornie winner Havasay go into the exotics.
