Rockhampton Tips January 10 - Track specialist can win today

  • Suggested Stake: 2 Units to Win,  3 Units to Place
Rockhampton racing at Callaghan Park Thursday

Callaghan Park copped some of the rain from Cyclone Penny, leaving us with a slightly rain affected track but that won’t deter the chances of the Jim O’Shea trained gelding I like as an each-way chance today.

Jim O’Shea has BARACHIEL lining up here and the track specialist looks ideally placed to win his second race this preparation. The five-year-old grey has resumed in great touch filling a top three place in all four runs this campaign. Two starts back (when second-up), he finished fast to win a BM75 here over 1200m, beating home Ragazzo Del Corsa (Short priced favourite in race four today). Then last start, he jumped well enough but lost his early spot and settled worse than mid-field on the fence. On straightening, jockey Chris Whiteley stuck to the fence hoping for to secure a run. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen which saw him having to cross the heels of several runners and finally seeing daylight, he flew home only to miss by a head in winning the race. A clear run to the line that day, he wins comfortably. Here, he has drawn gate six and may not have the opportunity to find the fence, which may work in his favour today. Should he be one-off the fence turning for home, he should see daylight long before he saw it last start. He is up to open class today but does drop 3kgs in weight and is quite capable of matching strides with this field. I think if we split our money and go both ways here, it will cover us for the day. He is still a winning chance.
