Roughies Tips - 3 roughies to back at Flemington on Saturday January 12

Illustrious Lad is a Group 2 winner at Flemington and lines up at each-way odds on Saturday

Racing is at Flemington on Saturday January 12 and we’ve found plenty of value on the card.

Here are three contenders to back at a nice price, each-way.

Race 6 - 3:28PM Bluegrass Bar Trophy (1400 METRES)
Race 6 at Flemington sees the fillies and mares go at it over the 1400m trip and in an even race, AMORTENTIA can make an impression at the each-way odds. The lightly raced five-year-old has been nothing short of consistent throughout her career thus far and was strong to the line when resuming, finishing 3rd to Twitchy Frank after being held up at a vital stage in the straight. She meets that horse 3kg better at the weights and her racing style would suggest she would be suited by the Flemington track. A second up winner in the past, the daughter of Wanted has won four from eight at the distance and has drawn to be prominent. Take the double figure odds.

Race 8 - 4:50PM Chester Manifold Stakes (1400 METRES)
The feature of the day at Flemington is the Chester Manifold Stakes and the veteran galloper, ILLUSTRIOUS LAD, can surprise at a nice price. The Flemington Group 2 winner last stepped out on New Year's Day in the Standish Handicap (1200m) and after jumping awkwardly he settled well and chased solidly in the closing stages to grab 5th behind Whispering Brook. Prior to that he dug deep to win at Listed level in the City Of Marion Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville. The seven-year-old has mainly raced over distances of 1200m and below in the past but is giving the impression that the 1400m should suit. With some question marks on some of those that are higher in the market, Illustrious Lad represents value.

Race 9 - 5:33PM The Roof Garden Handicap (1100 METRES)
The final event of the day sees a capacity field of gallopers set to tackle the 1100m and in the big field, the impressive I Am Someone might be a bit of a risk at the short odds. One that can push the favourite is the Hayes and Dabernig galloper, WIND FORCE, who can pounce at his third run from a spell. The six-year-old was luckless when resuming at Pakenham and led in a strong race at Mornington on December 27 before being run down in the final 100m. He went close at his only run at Flemington in the past and if he can get some cover early on he can surprise. Lachlan King rides and claims the 3kg for the son of Fastnet Rock.
