Roughies Tips - 3 Roughies to back at Flemington and Rosehill on Saturday March 16

  • There is plenty of value at Flemington and Rosehill and here are three to consider at each-way odds.
Racing is at Flemington on Saturday March 16

Group 1 racing action heads to Rosehill on Saturday March 16 for the running of the Coolmore Classic (1500m), while at Flemington, the $5 million All Star Mile (1600m) is the feature.

We have looked through the fields and picked out the best two roughies to back for the day, each-way.

Rosehill Race 6 - 4:10PM SCHWEPPES SKY HIGH STAKES (2000 METRES)
Race 6 at Rosehill is an open affair with all bar two of the 13 horse field posted at $17 or below in early markets. LIBRAN is currently a $14 chance and is more than capable of upstaging a number of these. The veteran resumed with a well beaten 5th behind his stablemate, Winx, on March 2and should find this task a lot easier. He ran 8th behind the mighty mare when resuming in the spring before rattling home to grab 3rd in the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at his next start. He was subsequently unlucky in the Kingston Town Stakes (2000m). The eight-year-old is more renowned as a stayer but his form over the 1600m distance reads as four wins from nine starts. It will be no surprise to see him there at the business end.

Rosehill Race 7 - 4:50PM COOLMORE CLASSIC (1500 METRES)
The Coolmore Classic (1500m) has had its fair share of upsets over the years and this years edition looks to be wide open. The value lies with the consistent EL DORADO DREAMING, who comes off a 3rd placing behind Nakeeta Jane and Fundamentalist in the recent Surround Stakes (1400m). On that occasion, the daughter of Ilovethiscity settled in a midfield slot and gained the split at the 250m mark before just missing out in a blanket finish. The runner-up in that race, Fundamentalist, has since gone on an performed admirably in the Randwick Guineas (1600m). Horses aged three have a good record in the Coolmore and El Dorado Dreaming should be suited by the big field as she likes to get back before running on. She has placed in eight of her 11 career starts and is a previous Group 1 winner. The $19 on offer is very tempting.

Flemington Race 8 - 5:10PM ALL-STAR MILE (1600 METRES)
There are a stack of genuine 'roughies' in the inaugural All Star Mile but if we eliminate some of the plodders, the real value lies with the old boy, HARTNELL. The eight-year-old has had two runs this time in and finished a well beaten 5th behind the favourite in this, Alizee, before edging closer behind that horse when 3rd, beaten just a length in the Futurity Stakes (1400m). He seems to save his best racing for when he is third up these days and at his last preparation, he defied the big weight to land a huge win in the Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick. He races well at Flemington and unlike some of the key contenders in this, he has drawn well, while he is no stranger to open class racing. He looks to be the play at the double figure odds.
