Roughies Tips - 3 Roughies to back at Doomben and Morphettville on Saturday May 18

  • There is plenty of value with Saturday feature racing at Doomben and Morphettville
  • Here are three to consider at each-way odds.

Racing is at Morphettville on Saturday May 18 and the Goodwood (1200m) is the feature, while at Doomben, the middle distance gallopers line up for Group 1 glory in the Doomben Cup (2000m).

Here are the best three roughies to back for the day, each-way.

Morphettville Race 5 - 2:36PM Robert & Fay Gerard R A Lee Stakes (1600 METRES)
The milers line up at Group 3 level in Race 5 at Morphettville and the improver should be HUSSYBAY, who has had three starts this time in, including a win over the 1400m here on April 27 before finishing 4th behind Lite'n In My Veins a week later. The son of Hussonet might not have been suited by the Slow track in that race and with firm conditions likely at Morphettville he can threaten them. He has won nine of 21 on Good tracks and has an excellent record at the venue. He will settled just off the speed and with the leading jockey, Jamie Kah, on board, he can go very close.

Morphettville Race 7 - 3:56PM The Goodwood (1200 METRES)
The feature of the day at Morphettville is the time honoured Goodwood and one that will jump at a high price is ZALMONA. On face value, he might find this a little bit hot but there is nothing wrong with his lead up form. He was posted last in the McKay Stakes (1100m), which is always a key lead up to the Goodwood and had no luck whatsoever when rattling home before just missing out behind Despatch, who he meets on better terms here. He has won or placed in nine of his past 10 runs and all bar one of those were at Morphettville. The big field should suit him and this race has been a bit of a roughies paradise over the years. He is well worth a throw at the stumps at the big odds.

Doomben Race 8 - 3:40PM HARDY BROTHERS JEWELLERS DOOMBEN CUP (2000 METRES)
The first emergency in the Doomben Cup is SIXTIES GROOVE and if the Kris Lees-trained galloper can sneak into the field he looks to be a great chance at the each-way odds. Connections have also accepted for the Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) at Rosehill. Interestingly, he has been trimmed in for the Doomben feature. The lightly raced six-year-old resumed in the recent Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) and ran 3rd to Archedemus. He was doing his best work late in that race and the step up to the 2000m is ideal as he has an impeccable record over the distance with four wins from as many starts. They boast a win over Trap For Fools last year, while he is also a two time second up winner. He has drawn in a nice spot for the Doomben Cup and is a player if he can gain a start.
