Roughies Tips - 3 roughies to back at Flemington on Stakes Day

  • It is a huge day of spring racing at Flemington for Stakes Day.
  • Here are three to back at the each-way odds.

It is the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival on Saturday November 9 and there are nine races on the programme.

We have looked through the fields and picked out the best three roughies to back for the day, each-way.

Race 5 - 2:50PM Darley Sprint Classic (1200 METRES)
The sprinters tackle the Darley Sprint Classic, the first of the two features for the day and it is ALIZEE that can upstage some of the more favoured runners in the market. The Godolphin mare needs to make up a bit of ground on the likes of Santa Ana Lane after finishing 7th to that horse in the recent Everest but should be an improver with a better run as she was forced out fairly wide in the Everest before sticking on well. The daughter of Sepoy headed into the $14 million feature with a seven week break in between runs and might also benefit from being a tad on the fresh side, while she has also performed well on Soft tracks in the past. Don't discount her.

Race 7 - 4:10PM Network 10 Chatham Stakes (1400 METRES)
Some handy performers tackle the Chatham Stakes and STREETS OF AVALON looks to be a player back in this class. The Shane Nichols-trained galloper tackled the recent Kennedy Cantala (1600m) and tired to finish 8th but was entitled to after a tough run that saw him stuck out three wide with no cover for much of that race. Prior to that he was a strong winner at Caulfield at Group 3 level over the 1400m and was close up in the Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) over the trip earlier on as well. A slight concern is the wide gate but he will push forward and there doesn't look to be huge amounts of speed inside of him so he could cross without burning too much fuel. He represents value at the $19.

Race 8 - 4:55PM Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes (2000 METRES)
The Group 1 action closes out with the running of the $2 million Mackinnon Stakes and it is KINGS WILL DREAM that looms as a value pick at the double figure odds. The Chris Waller-trained galloper returns to the scene of his Group 1 triumph earlier this spring, having taken out the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at the venue. Since then, he produced a respectable performance when 6th in the Cox Plate (2040m) and it is interesting to note that gallopers coming out of that race have an excellent record in the Mackinnon, winning it in 12 of the past 19 years. He has won three and placed in two of six Flemington runs and performs well on Soft decks. With even luck from the barrier he can go very close.
