Sandown Tips December 4 - Two best bets for Sandown

  • Two best bets for the program
Sandown

Midweek racing is at Sandown on Wednesday, for an eight-race program on the Hillside track with the rail out 6m. The rail was out 3m last Wednesday and it was a huge advantage to be on-pace, with seven of the eight winners being in the top three in running at the 400m.

I won’t be betting until I see how the track plays, as one of my tips Bianconi Magic, will be settling near last in the run.

Race 2 - 3:55pm Ladbrokes Back Yourself Hcp (1300m)
I thought the best value of the meeting was a first starter in race two, the Mick Kent-trained SENECA FALLS. The three-year-old daughter of Reward For Effort has had two trials at Cranbourne and both looked poor, which is why I think she has opened such a long price. The thing to note is, both those trials were on heavy ground. After her last trial on a Heavy 8, she had another jumpout at Cranbourne on a good track and the jumpout was much improved. She travelled just behind the speed and when asked for an effort she really accelerated through nicely to win by two-lengths under light riding. Mick Kent doesn’t take his horses to Metro maidens unless he has an opinion of them and with Ethan Brown on board from barrier seven, I think this horse is over the odds. The other two horses I could have something on with a positive parade is Briseur De Coeur, who was run off his legs last start at Dunkeld over 1000m but ran home in the fastest last 200m, 400m, 600m and 800m of the meeting and now gets Ben Melham on board. The favourite Busby was backed as if unbeatable first-up at Benalla and the stewards report was he failed to handle to hard track. He gets Ollie on here and must be considered.

Race 6 - 6:15pm Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1300m)
The form guide will say BIANCONI MAGIC ran seventh first-up at The Valley but I thought that run was full of merit and I was keen to back him second-up in a race like this. He was wide and swooping, which is usually never an advantage at The Valley and it wasn’t on this night, with seven of the eight winners coming from the inside four lanes at the 200m mark. Keep in mind, he was ten-wide when making his run at the 200m, after running the second-fastest 800m-600m split of the race and the fastest 400m-200m split of the race. I thought he was entitled to drop out and run near last but he kept chasing, running the third-fastest last 200m of the race to finish only 2.2L from Cilauro, who had the dream run. It’s interesting to note that he won first-up last preparation and then dropped his benchmark figure second-up, when stepping from 1200m to 1400m. Usually that would concern me but it doesn’t here because one, it was synthetic form, which is its own little island and two, he had two trials leading into that preparation, whereas this preparation he only had one trial. With the likes of Thorondor, Taygeta and Cilauro setting a solid pace in front, if horses can run on then he is a good bet at around the $5.50 mark.
