Sandown.

The usual midweek meeting is at Sandown, with an unusual start time. Race free Monday’s also means the start of twilight racing at Sandown on a Wednesday afternoon, with the first race at 3:25pm. We have three bets on the eight-race program.

Race 1 - 3:25pm Ladbrokes Handicap (1600m)
A small but competitive field gets twilight racing underway at Sandown on Wednesday and I’m with the Darren Weir-trained QUEEN LA DIVA. The three-year-old filly was ridden quietly at her first three career starts, running sixth on debut before only beating five runners home at her next two combined starts. The blinkers went on three starts ago and she hasn’t missed a place since, running second behind the smart Beauty Option at Cranbourne before stepping up to a mile for the first time at Bendigo. She was ridden a treat by John Allen, hitting the front at the 300m and bolting away from Rebel Romance to win by 2.5 lengths, with another seven-lengths back to third. Looking at the speed map, Pierless and Crown Dancer should both roll forward, giving Queen La Diva the box seat run just off the speed. With a little luck at the top of the straight, she should be powering over the top of them late.

Race 2 - 4:05pm Blue Star Print Plate (1600m)
I’m happy to take on the favourite Really Swish at the price, as I’m trusting the Queen La Diva formline with the Tony McEvoy-trained REBEL ROMANCE. The three-year-old daughter of Rebel Raider is knocking on the door of a victory, with improved efforts at all three career starts. She looked as though she lacked a little fitness two starts ago at Morphettville but really improved last start behind Queen La Diva at Bendigo. She ran the quickest last 200m,400m,600m and 800m of the race, beating the third-placed horse by seven-lengths. Really Swish and Rebel Romance map together in the run from barriers six and seven. I’m confident Rebel Romance has more upside and Really Swish has had enough chances for mine.

Race 4 - 5:15pm Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (1000m)
Admittedly, this is a throw at the stumps, although at big odds we can afford to be wrong. The five-year-old gelding DELTA D’OR started his career in Melbourne but has spent the majority of his racing career up in Darwin. He was transferred back to the Amy Johnston yard in Mornington and wasn’t seen for 65 weeks before returning in a Cranbourne trial. I was particularly taken by his work, as he finished only 1.2 lengths behind Malaguerra under light riding, whilst the Group One galloper was being pushed along. He returned at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago and had absolutely no luck. It was nothing more than a trial, as he galloped in behind horses for the entire 1000m trip. He looked to be jogging and although the run was inconclusive, I saw enough to back him here at Sandown. The map from barrier one is a concern but he is worth an each-way play at a massive price.
