Widge Turf

The Melbourne spring carnival heads out to Sandown on Saturday November 16 for a quality card that features the Zipping Classic (2400m) and the Sandown Guineas (1600m).

We have combined our best bets from the venue into a four-leg multi that pays $551 for a $10 investment at sportsbet.

Race 4 - 2:10PM Ladbrokes Sandown Stakes (1500 METRES)
Race 4 is the Group 3 Sandown Stakes and we are looking for WIDGEE TURF (WIN) to get the multi off to a flyer. The Patrick Payne-trained galloper has a clear class edge on this lot and only has to handle the 59kg to feature on the winners list for the first time this spring. After running 3rd in the Group 1 Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) he then got way out of his ground when 9th in the Toorak to Fierce Impact. At his latest run he went down by the barest of margins to Iconoclasm in the VOBIS Gold Star (1500m) when carrying 61kg at Moonee Valley. The son of Turffontein has drawn ideally in barrier and is one from one at the track and distance.

Race 7 - 4:00PM Ladbrokes Sandown Guineas (1600 METRES)
The Sandown Guineas is always an interesting race at the tail end of the spring carnival and this years edition looks wide open. One to consider at the each-way odds is the Hayes and Dabernig-trained CONQUEROR (PLACE), who comes out of the Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington. In that race he finished 4th behind some of the better performers of his age group in Dalasun, Brandenburg and Groundswell, running home well. Prior to that he was competitive in the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) when running 6th. He should appreciate the drop in class and can box seat from the barrier.

Race 8 - 4:40PM Quayclean Zipping Classic (2400 METRES)
The Zipping Classic features some solid performers, including the likes of Humidor, and Southern France, the latter of whom comes out of the Melbourne Cup (3200m). However, I am going with the last start winner, SAVVY OAK (PLACE), to cause a minor upset after turning things around by winning at Flemington last week on Stakes day. The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained galloper has shown talent throughout his career and finished runner-up in the South Australian Derby (2500m) earlier this year before struggling in his early spring runs this time around when settling in a forward spot. Last weekend he was ridden a bit more quietly in the early to middle stages, settling worse than midfield and he overcame difficulties in the straight before charging to an easy win. He rises in class but it was hard not to be impressed by his effort last time and he may have turned the corner.

Race 9 - 5:20PM Le Pine Funerals Summoned Stakes (1500 METRES)
The mares tackle the Summoned Stakes and VANUATU (PLACE) looks to be a solid top three contender. The Grahame Begg-trained galloper has had 10 starts for four wins and has stepped out twice this time around for a win at Cranbourne before finishing 3rd in the Group 3 Tesio Stakes (1600m) behind Amangiri at Moonee Valley. In that race, she settled towards the tail and was carried out wide on the camber before running on. She should be peaking at her third run back and will get a nice steer from the draw.
