Sir John Monash Stakes Tips - $34 chance to cause an upset

Aaron Hamilton in Free Tips 11 Jul 2019

Saturday’s feature race at Caulfield, the Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m), is a wide-open affair with plenty of unknowns.

The James Cummings-trained Soothing is the $4.40 favourite first-up from a spell, while Bandipur who won last start for Cummings is having his first start for Richard Laming and is the second elect at $6.50.

Ken’s Dream, Oak Door and Crack The Code are a talented trio and resume from a spell, and it wouldn’t surprise to see either win.

Jungle Edge will attract attention – especially if the track is rain-affected – but he’s failed to win in 10 starts at the track and doesn’t represent great value at $8.

I was keen to follow the Heart Conquered form seeing she was 3rd to Top Striker in a strong rating race last start, but Top Striker disappointed as my top selection in the Ramornie Handicap on Wednesday which has put a cloud over that form.

In such and open contest, I want to find value, and one horse that represents sensational value and ticks a lot of boxes is the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Spending To Win.

The son of Snitzel has been racing below his best in five runs this preparation, but he was only 2.9 lengths from Viridine in the Ortensia Stakes (1100m) at Scone, 3.3 lengths from Deprive over 1100m at Randwick and then 2.1 lengths from the same galloper in the June Stakes (1100m) at Randwick.

Last start he overraced for the majority of the 1100m trip down the Flemington straight and battled on well to finish 2.3 lengths from Milwaukee who was runner-up to Malibu Style last Saturday – and Malibu Style is an $8.50 chance in the Sir John Monash.

Considering Spending To Win overraced so badly, he surely has plenty of upside if he settles, and his last win was at this track and distance where he defeated the speedy Eduardo in a slick 1:02.80.

Race favourite Soothing has two efforts at the track and distance and his best was a 2.5-length 6th placing behind Grey Shadow in a time of 1:03.34.

Spending To Win’s best at the track and trip rates 5.5 lengths above that, and yet he’s a $34 chance.

He maps perfectly from barrier 8 and should land one or two pairs back on the outside, and that will give him every chance to chime in at the right time and claim an overdue win.

Great each-way value at $34 and $8.50.
