Our expert previews each race on Stakes Day including the two Group 1 races on the program.

Race 1 - 12:15PM MELBOURNE’S OWN 3AW TROPHY (1600 METRES)
Manuel has the class to be winning this, but he steps up to the mile for the first time following a taxing 1400m run on Heavy ground four days ago – no thanks. If you take Fifty Stars out of that race, Manuel wins convincingly, but it’s the unknown that has me wary of him. AL PASSEM on the other hand is a winner at the track and distance fourth-up before going for a break, and with four runs under his belt following that break, he’ll take some catching from out in front.

2nd – Manuel
3rd – Call It A Day
4th – Eshtiraak

Race 2 - 12:50PM JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION PLATE (2000 METRES)
LUCKY FOR ALL finished best to score from Danon Roman last start, and that pair can fill the Quinella again. Lucky For All was a tragedy beaten fourth-up last campaign as the $1.40 favourite, but with three runs under his belt this time in, he looks ready to show his best. Danon Roman does meet him better at the weights, but the inside draw may work against him if he drifts a few pairs back. Lucky For All is unbeaten in two starts over 2000m and should get every chance down the Flemington straight from barrier 7.

2nd – Danon Roman
3rd – The Pinnacle
4th – Top Prospect

Race 3 - 1:30PM WATCH RACING.COM SPRINGTIME STAKES (1400 METRES)
RINGERDINGDING is producing sizzling sectionals late and I can’t wait to see what he can do at Flemington. Yulong January beat him home by six lengths two starts back at Caulfield, and he was scratched last Saturday after drawing poorly out wide. He maps well here and if Ringerdingding doesn’t bring his A-game, Yulong January will be there to claim victory.

2nd – Yulong January
3rd – Sunset Watch
4th – Scottish Rogue

Race 4 - 2:10PM DERUCCI CHATHAM STAKES (1400 METRES)
WIDGEE TURF has been racing extremely well this campaign and has only missed the placings once in his past 13 starts as well as racking up nine wins and nine placings from his 23-start career. He was charging home behind Iconoclasm last start over 1500m before that galloper went on to finish 2.5 lengths from Best Of Days in the Group 1 Kennedy Mile. Widgee gets in with 1.5kg less here, has won at Flemington previously and this looks easier.

2nd – Dreamforce
3rd – Spectroscope
4th – Dollar For Dollar

Race 5 - 2:50PM QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES (2600 METRES)
LORD FANDANGO looks set to peak for this and will take some beating from the good gate. He impressed first-up when finishing 3rd in the Benalla Cup (2046m) and was far from disgraced in the Herbert Power (2400m) when finishing five lengths from Yucatan. He was caught three wide in the Bendigo Cup (2400m) and hit the line better than anything from the rear, and with those three runs under his belt and a soft draw, he looks hard to beat here.

2nd – Midterm
3rd – Gallic Chieftain
4th – Jaameh

Race 6 - 3:30PM 7NEWS MATRIARCH STAKES (2000 METRES)
It’s rare you find a race where you give every single runner a chance of winning but that’s the way I see this fillies and mares feature. I’ve been with Our Libretto in all four wins this campaign and reluctantly have to jump off her in favour of SHEEZDASHING. The four-year-old mare has a brilliant sprint and really hit the well last start behind Octabello in the Cranbourne Cup (2025m) after being widest on the turn and losing ground before motoring late. She goes well at Flemington and should be at her peak fourth-up.

2nd – Luvaluva
3rd – Our Libretto
4th – Temple Of Bel

Race 7 - 4:10PM VRC SPRINT CLASSIC (1200 METRES)
1st – Redzel
2nd – Brave Smash
3rd – Spirit Of Valour
4th – Spright

Race 8 - 4:55PM SEPPELT MACKINNON STAKES (2000 METRES)
1st – Shillelagh
2nd – Blair House
3rd – Extra Brut
4th – Latrobe

Race 9 - 5:45PM GRAND HANDICAP (1100 METRES)
The speedy EURACK resumes from a spell and aims to remain unbeaten in five runs. She brings strong previous form but must carry more weight than she has in her four-start career. The outside gate could be an advantage late in the day and Luke Nolen certainly knows how to rate a sprinter down the Flemington straight.

2nd – Order Of Command
3rd – Revenire
4th – Lagerfeld
