Plagued with bad luck, Georgie Bourke’s four-year-old, KANUI lines up here owing punters a small fortune, but most of her failures were not her doing. Since winning her maiden at Gatton, things just haven’t gone right for the Real Saga mare. In fact, in 14 runs since then, she has only managed three minor placings but bad luck has haunted her since moving north. She left Kelly Schweida’s Brisbane stables and arrived in Townsville in February this year where local trainer Georgie Bourke took control of her. Since then, she’s managed two runner-up finishes and a very unlucky last start third which we’ll get to in a moment. But going back to her back-to-back second placings, she looked all set to break through next start when she lined up as the $4 favourite in a BM55 here at the Cluden Park track when (as her luck would have it), a rival runner fell right in front of her, tipping Les Tilley out of the saddle as well, which was heartbreaking for those (of us) who backed her that day. She then copped a run of bad barrier draws which proved too much to overcome. Then, we come to her last start, and dare I point the finger but a look at the replay will reveal the truth. She was unsettled and ‘not’ ready to jump when the starter let them go, leaving her four lengths last on settling. Her closing 100 metres was better than any all day and saw her fly home to grab third prize (which ‘should’ have been a big win). Surely, today, she gets her chance to make amends for all this wretched bad luck. She has drawn out in gate six, which pleases me because she needs clean air and running room and this will be an advantage for her racing style. Also, I spoke with trainer Georgie Bourke who told me that the blinkers are coming off and the winkers will go back on today in an attempt to settle her down a little better in the stalls. I’m prepared to go with her one more time. I am confident she can beat all the runners here today and going both ways (a little bigger place-wise), we can collect on her this time. The recommendation here is, 2 units a win, 3 units a place. May the racing Gods bless her with better luck today.
