Townsville Tips May 23 - 2 winning chances today

Steve Bennett in Free Tips 23 May 2019
  • Chillemi's filly can bounce back
  • Written Tycoon mare can cause an upset
  • Suggested Stake:  2 Units to Win (on both selections)
Townsville racing at Cluden Park Thursday

Conditions are ideal for racing at Cluden Park, Townsville today and I am running with a couple here including one on the rise from the Roy Chillemi stable.

Weather: Overcast (29)  Track: Good 4   Rail: Out 6m (1000m-W/Post), Out 3m Remainder

Race 1 - 1:27PM TAB DOWNLOAD THE APP QTIS 2YO CLASSIC PRELUDE Handicap (1200 METRES)
The Roy Chillemi-trained ORIENTAL GIRL started this preparation on a high, winning her first starts in Cairns. Both victories were over the 950m sprint distance but will be stepping up to the 1300m journey today which should suit her even more, being a daughter of Mossman. Her first visit to the Townsville track saw her finish third behind Red Satin, beaten more than four lengths that day. Trainer Roy Chillemi said after the event that he was hoping the filly would be ridden quietly behind the pace, however jockey Wanderson D’Avila couldn’t contain her early and let her stroll to the lead. She weakened over the final 100m. She meets her two main rivals (Lady Yendor and El Of A Saga) better at the weights today which is a bonus but it will still come down to how D’Avila handles the Mossman two-year-old. She is drawn out again today but this time does have some early speed drawn inside with Kwikilla and race favourite Lady Yendor who will both be contesting the lead. If D’Avila can contain her and find a sit behind these two, he will have the last shot at them in the run home. She could cause a minor upset here.

Race 7 - 5:10PM TAB Class 3 Handicap (1000 METRES)
Hoping we can end the day as we start it here and I am predicting another minor upset with the locally-trained SWEET PERFUME to finish ahead of the more fancied Pure Hawk today, purely due to the distance they will run. Pure Hawk won his maiden over 1300m this time last year and hasn’t contested a single race less than 1200m since. Sweet Perfume was formerly with the Clinton McDonald stable at Caulfield and made her QLD debut here two weeks ago where she looked all-over a winner but was grabbed on the line to finish second, nosed-out by Little Stryker in a BM60 over the 1000m trip. She drops a kilo from that performance here and second-up she will strip much fitter for this. The blinkers come off today and the visors go back on the Written Tycoon mare. Jockey Ryan Wiggins had his wisdom teeth pulled earlier this week but has assured me he is ready and up to the task here today. (He rode Lucky Fix to victory yesterday as his only ride at the Gold Coast meeting). I am confident we can ‘book-end’ the meeting today.
