  • Suggested Stake:  2 Units to Win on both
Townsville racing at Cluden Park Tuesday

Drizzly rain visited Townsville over the past few days but the track has held up well and I have settled on a couple who look big chances at good odds.

Race 3 - 2:42PM CARLTON UNITED BREWERIES OPEN Handicap (1609 METRES)
Weight can stop a train (as the old cliché goes), and I am a true believer. It is for that very reason that I am steering clear of the race favourite here and sticking with a track specialist who is weighted to perfection. The Roy Chillemi-trained CRIMSON HALO missed his first top-three finish in seven starts when last here in a race which was far too short for him. So far, seven trips to Townsville (from his Atherton Tablelands stable) have resulted in four good wins but over the 1000m sprint two weeks ago, he just couldn’t go with them in the end. Today however, we see him jump back to the mile trip which is far more up his alley, being a track and distance winner already. The biggest issue here is the weight comparison between himself and race favourite Mishani Vaidra, which I believe will be the difference in the long run. Its not often you see a four-year-old mare spot a five-year-old gelding 10kgs in any event, and still be sent out a near even-money chance. Mind you she is city class, having won several races at Doomben and the Gold Coast, so she does have some panache with her racing style and this must be respected. The barrier draw and speed map both suggest the Chillemi gelding (should) be ahead of the Jamie McConachy-trained mare turning for home and that’s where the pull in the weights could paint the finish here. Currently at twice the favourite’s price, I just see ‘the Halo’ as a far better option in this, throwing in his very glossy resume as well. Young Adin Thompson is riding in great form of late and has saluted three times from his five rides on the Sebring gelding. He is my top selection here.

Race 5 - 3:57PM TAB BENCHMARK 60 Handicap (1000 METRES)
Now to a locally-trained gelding who looks ideally placed, second-up. Georgie Bourke’s four-year-old, AIRACOBRA showed enough first-up to suggest he will strip fitter here and improve on the run as well. He was a little fractious in the mounting yard and again behind the gates which probably had something to do with his early gate speed, which saw him jump out and lead, This wasn’t the game plan as he was first-up off a four-month break and was lumped with topweight of 59kgs. The inevitable happened, and passing the 100m mark, he weakened but battled on to hold third place behind Sweet Perfume in the Class 3 over 1000 metres. He drops in grade today and will fins this easier. Most of the early pace has drawn wide here so it could pay for rider Les Tilley to find a sit behind what looks like a battle-royal up front. From gate four, he will do little work in finding the perfect sit and he should be full of running on straightening. Mighty Marmalade comes from south of the border and brings mediocre form with him (winning one of 12 starts) and being first-up off a nine-week break, might find this a little quick. Even-money looks way unders as well, from where I sit. If Tilley can ride a patient race (and contain the Exceed And Excel gelding), he should be mighty hard to run down in the final 200 metres here.
