Townsville Tips August 15 - Lonhro gelding can bounce back today

  • Lonhro gelding looks the pick today
Townsville racing at Cluden Park Thursday

Well, despite no rain for over a month we still have a soft track to contend with but that just enhances the chances of this Lonhro gelding today.

Race 6 - 4:35PM BROWN BROTHERS BenchMark 69 Handicap (1200 METRES)
On paper at least, this appears to be a three-horse race (but we just know it won’t turn out that way), however, I can see the John Barr-trained MALOS bouncing back from his courageous effort in the Townsville Guineas last start. Nicely bred, by Lonhro out of a Street Cry mare, the gelding went into the Guineas with a near perfect resume, winning three of his first four runs this time in and all three victories at the Cluden Park track. The only query was could he run the 1600m trip out. That question has now been answered but he didn’t go down without a fight. He was already up against it when he drew the car park in gate 12 of 14. To overcome this, Scott Sheargold used him up early to cross and briefly lead the field. He soon yielded that, and took a sit in the box seat behind the leader. He scored a dream rails run in the home straight and for a moment looked a serious contender, however the final 100 metres got the better of him. He was gallant in defeat, finishing fifth, just two lengths from victory which went to race favourite Steelz Time. At one stage he was a solid third pick for the event at $6 but drifted to double figures in the end. Today, Barr brings him back to the 1200m trip where he is already a winner on this track. He has finally drawn a decent gate and comes out of gate one here which should see Sheargold box-seating on him again, only this time the fuel won’t be used up too early. The other two hot chances in the race, namely Airacobra and Sweet Perfume also have good early gate speed and we could see the three of them showing the way early on. I am sticking with Malos as he has the better draw, less weight to carry, is back to his comfort zone at the 1200m and two of his three wins have come on wet tracks.
