Steve Bennett

Steve’s love for the sporting life began when seeing his first rugby league match in 1968. From that day on, he became obsessed with it and have followed it ever since – playing the game at an early age in school before progressing through the ranks to play for my home town and soon after made the District team.

His love of racing began in the same year when at 10 years of age, his father, who was an SP Bookmaker at the time, asked him to pick a horse in the Melbourne Cup for a bit of fun. The horse picked out was none other than Rain Lover, who went on to win the Cup by eight lengths. Asked to do the same thing the following year, he picked Rain Lover again. Since that day, after Rain Lover won back-to-back Cups, a new obsession had begun.
His biggest thrill in the world of thoroughbreds was being at Rosehill in March 1977 to see the mighty Luskin Star win the Golden Slipper by 7 lengths.

Racetracks and Rugby League rule his social life in a way that can’t be matched, and Steve regularly digs out stories and provides us with winners in his Benno’s Best selections.
