Blue Diamond Stakes Tips & Preview

11 colts and geldings and five fillies make up the field of 16 for Saturday’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

14 of the 16 runners recorded Person Best (BP) efforts last start, but which can go on with the job and claim the $1.5 million showpiece.

General Beau has recorded the strongest Benchmark (BM) figure when going 9.0 lengths quicker than standard to win the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (1100m).

Runner-up Anamoe and 3rd placegetter Jigsaw also rated high going 8.8 and 7.4 lengths quicker than BM, while the winner of the fillies’ division, Arcaded, rated much lower going 2.0 lengths above standard.

The boys went three lengths quicker to the 600m and also went two lengths quicker in the final 600m, and that tells us the boys were genuinely stronger overall and the slower time by the girls wasn’t pace related.

Enthaar on the other hand comes out of a different form race and rates highly, and she’s clearly the filly with the most ability and as favourite, bookmakers favour her to upset the boys.

In assessing the boy’s edition of the Prelude, Anamoe was slow to begin before running the quickest 600m, 400m and 200m sectionals of the race.

He gets winkers off and blinkers on for the first time and considering his start couldn’t really get any worse than last time, he has a lot of upside.

Amamoe snuck up along the fence and made ground but looked gone on the bend and was unlikely to run a place.

However, he really dug in over the final furlong and tested General Beau.

It looked as if he wasn’t trying and the blinkers should work a treat for the son of Street Boss.

Expected second-up improvement, a significant gear change, strongest last start sectionals and Damien Oliver on makes him hard to beat.

The only downside is barrier 15 even though Written By won from barrier 15 in 2018.

The favourite, Enthaar, was dominant last start defeating Ingratiating who subsequently won the Talindert Stakes (1100m) at Flemington.

The Talindert was run six lengths slower than the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) and Ingratiating was only 2.3 lengths from Enthaar who was throttled down late and could have won by more.

Bottom line is, both Enthaar and Anamoe have the potential to significantly increase their rating here, and it wouldn’t surprise to see either win.

Enthaar has also drawn wide in gate 14 for Mark Zahra, and the cleanest ride may be the determining factor.

Enthaar also absolutely crawled early last start before coming home with some sizzling sectionals, and I don’t want to read too much into her final splits because of the lack of early tempo.

Anamoe represents great value at $9 and is my Blue Diamond Stakes tip for 2021.
