Might And Power Tips, Prediction & Preview

Looking for Might And Power (Caulfield Stakes) tips? Our form expert previews the Caulfield Group 1 and gives his top predictions for the race.

Below is our assessment of the 2021 edition of the race:

The first of three Group 1 races at Caulfield on Saturday is the Might And Power Stakes and a field of six have accepted for the $1 million affair.

Zaaki heads the market at the $1.30 quote with Sportsbet, while Probabeel is the main danger to the favourite at the $6. Homesman is on the third line of betting at the $10 quote, while Nonconformist ($16), No Effort ($41) and Nickajack Cave ($71) round out the field.

On face value, the race looks similar to the recent Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Sandown on September 25. Zaaki and Probabeel come out of that race, which attracted five runners.

That pair provided the exacta with Zaaki cruising to a two length win ahead of Probabeel. Zaaki sat outside the leader that day in Fifty Stars, who eventually floundered. Probabeel settled leaders back and produced the fastest 400m-200m split but was under the whip, while Zaaki went to the line under hands and heels riding from Craig Williams, producing the fastest last 200m.

It is hard to see the mare turning things around on that performance. The step up to the 2000m should only suit Zaaki, who won by seven lengths in the Doomben Cup (2000m) in the spring, when stepping up from a Holllindale Stakes (1800m) win.

Where will they settle in the Might And Power (Caulfield Stakes)?

A big difference come Saturday could be a faster tempo with the likes of No Effort and Homesman in action. No Effort is a natural leader and went at a hectic speed early on when leading them up in the Naturalism Stakes (2000m).

The Gavin Bedggood-trained galloper went 13.6 lengths faster than standard up until the 600m mark but floundered late in the piece to run 10th. Nonconformist was strong to the line that day and pipped Delphi, who heads to the Herbert Power.

Look for No Effort to lead them up with Zaaki to sit just off him. Homesman might kick up from barrier 2 but is likely to settle leaders back, while Probabeel will be handy. Expect Nonconformist and Nickajack Cave to be the trailing pair.

Could there be a blowout in the Caulfield Stakes?

Nonconformist boasts the best last start benchmark figures of any runner in this race, going 14.7 lengths faster than standard when winning the Naturalism.

Zaaki went 11.8 lengths when winning the Underwood, which is inferior in comparison, but he barely got out of second gear. His peak figure since coming to Australia was over the 2200m in the Q22 at Eagle Farm back in June when going 13.5 lengths faster than standard.

Homesman went 11 lengths faster than standard benchmark when carting the 60kg in the JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley recently. He was run down late by Secret Blaze. Second up in the autumn he improved more than five lengths on figures when going from a 3rd in the Peter Young Stakes (1800m) to a win in the Australian Cup (2000m), going 15 lengths faster than standard.

They are the best figures that any horse in this race has produced in the past two years. He comes in at the same time this preparation. He then bumped into Zaaki twice after the Australian Cup, battling into 9th in the Hollindale before landing just over a length away in the Q22.

We can expect a solid run from Probabeel as long as the forecast showers don’t deliver anything substantial. Nickajack Cave probably needs the run.

Who will win the Might And Power (Caulfield Stakes) in 2021?

Zaaki is at the short price for obvious reasons but is hard to back straight out at the price. Homesman is the one to be on for the place. His second up run in the autumn was over the 2000m and he achieved a peak figure by going 15 lengths faster than standard that day. He might get the perfect trail into it behind No Effort and is much better suited back to weight-for-age after what was a solid run first up at the Valley recently.
