There is no doubt in my mind who the best horse is in this race, and she certainly had excuses for finishing 3rd last time.

The Chris Waller-trained Verry Elleegant is a six-time Group 1 winner and she just loves some sting out of the ground having racked up nine wins from 15 starts on rain-affected going.

She was beaten 2.2 lengths by Colette in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) when resuming from a break, and it was the lack of early speed that put her out of the race.

Verry Elleegant was forced to go 7.3 lengths slower than standard benchmark (BM) until the 600m which was the second slowest she has gone in her career.

She finished the race off powerfully going 10.5 lengths quicker than standard for the final 600m which is the strongest last 600m effort of her career.

The slow early tempo made it mathematically impossible for her to win while Colette was in the perfect striking position and took over at the 200m mark to score impressively.

Unfortunately for Verry Elleegant, there is no more pace in Saturday’s event and her stablemate Kolding is likely to control the race from the front.

I tipped Kolding third-up in the George Main Stakes (1600m) last year due to his massive third-up spike, and he duly saluted.

Again he reaches the mile third-up, and with his predictable spike approaching, he looks extremely hard to beat if he can control this race.

Forget the fact that Colette came from 1.5 lengths off Kolding and put two lengths on him, and forget the fact Verry Elleegant was rapidly taking ground off him – this horse just improves out of sight third-up.

In fact, in all six preparations, Kolding has improved by between five and seven lengths third-up so his improvement is super consistent.

Like Kolding, Colette has also improved her BM performance second-up each campaign so she does have room form improvement second-up on Saturday.

However, her peak performances over a mile are a long way off Kolding’s, and if he runs this at his own tempo out in front, I can’t see her getting past him this time.
