George Main Stakes Nominations

George Main Stakes Nominations Avilius winning the George Main Stakes in 2019 (PA Images)

Saturday’s Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick has attracted nine nominations.

Defending champion Avilius for trainer James Cummings is one of two entrants for Godolphin with stablemate Colette also nominated for the race.

Avilius, a seven-year-old gelding, hasn’t won since capturing the George Main Stakes in 2019 by a comfortable 2.3 lengths. He has raced eight times since that victory with a pair of third placings in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and Tancred Stakes (2400m) as his best results.

Verry Elleegant was the winner of the Tancred Stakes and the Chris Waller-trained five-year-old mare has been nominated for the George Main. She won the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) first up and looks cherry ripe to have a dominant spring carnival.

Waller has nominated four runners for the race with Imaging, Kolding and Star Of The Seas also entered; the latter was narrowly beaten by Verry Elleegant in the Winx Stakes.

Rounding out the entries are Dreamforce for trainer John Thompson, Nettoyer for Wendy Roche and the John O’Shea-trained Opacity.
