George Main Stakes Nominations 2021

Nominations for Saturday’s Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick closed on Monday with 14 horses entered.

The headline nomination for the George Main Stakes is the Chris Waller-trained six-year-old mare Verry Elleegant.

She kicked off her spring campaign in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) where she was narrowly beaten by Mo’unga. Her first-up record suggested she may need the run and she has a much better second-up record of six starts for three wins heading into Saturday’s George Main Stakes.

The step up in distance is another positive for the reigning Caulfield Cup (2400m) winner.

Stablemate Kolding is the defending winner of this race and Waller would love to win the race for the seventh time in the past eight years.

Kolding finished ninth at his first run back from a spell in the Winx Stakes, beaten 1.83 lengths. He generally takes multiple runs before hitting top gear and has only won once from seven attempts when second up.

The James Cummings-trained seven-year-old gelding Cascadian has been nominated for the race. He was fifth in the Winx Stakes before running fourth in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) won by Think It Over. The winner of that race has also been nominated for the George Main along with runner up Riodini for trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.
