GOLDEN SLIPPER TIPS & PREVIEW
Looking for Golden Slipper tips and best bets? We dissect times and form to find the winner of the 2022 Golden Slipper at Rosehill.
Tips will be available following the barrier draw. See our 2021 preview below for an example of what to expect.
Profiteer has been installed as favourite in the worlds richest race for the two-year-olds and is at the $3.80 quote with NEDS after the barrier draw.
The Mick Price and Michael Kent Junior-trained galloper comes out of the Todman Stakes (1200m) for the colts and geldings and was pipped at the post by Anamoe ($14) in that race.
The son of Capitalist attempted to lead all the way and might have cost himself by overracing in the early stages. The winner went 5.3 lengths faster than standard benchmark and produced the fastest last 400m and 200m of the race, while Stay inside was another that ran on.
The latter was arguably the luckless runner of the race, overcoming traffic before getting out late to finish just under a length away. The Richard and Michael Freedman-trained galloper is the likely improver and went 8.6 lengths faster than standard when claiming the Pierro Plate (1200m) prior to his Todman run.
It is Artorius that boats the best benchmark figures that any of the juveniles have produced by going more than 11 lengths faster than standard benchmark when rocketing home off the solid tempo in the Blue Diamond to edge past Ingratiating. He comes in with four weeks in between runs and the son of Flying Artie might have a bit of upside in comparison to some of the others.
Ingratiating has since run 5th behind Shaquero in the Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) and might want the 1400m at this stage. That group of horses are among the main chances when you assess the colts and geldings.
The fillies have generally been a tier or two below the boys this season and Four Moves Ahead ($7.50) is the only girl that is really in the market. The daughter of Snitzel settled on the speed before defeating She’s All Class in the Sweet Embrace Stakes but went just 3.7 lengths faster than standard in that race and will need to keep improving to match the others.
As is the case with most edition’s of the Golden Slipper, the pace should be genuine as Profiteer, Home Affairs, Rocket Tiger, O’President, Glistening and Four Moves Ahead are all likely to want to settle in the first few.
A couple of those have drawn out and will look to cross, while it will be interesting to see what Hugh Bowman does aboard Profiteer from barrier 5. Will he let him roll or is it best to take a sit?
Given the map, I am keen on one that will settle just behind the leading group and Stay Inside might be in the sweet spot. Anamoe and Artorius are a couple that will get back. Anamoe has drawn barrier 16, while Artorius has also drawn out in barrier 13.
Then there is the question of the state of the track. It is just about a foregone conclusion that we will cop another Heavy track for the Slipper. O’President and Four Moves Ahead are the only two in the field that have exposure on the Heavy and both were able to win when they struck that surface.
O’President’s win came in a Maiden before leading all the way on the Soft in the Skyline Stakes (1200m). Four Moves Ahead won on the Kensington track on the Heavy before scoring on the Soft in the Sweet Embrace Stakes.
Profiteer relished the Soft in the Inglis Millennium (1100m), defeating some weaker types by five lengths. Home Affairs, Stay Inside, Mallory, Swift Witness and Rocket Tiger are others to have won on the Soft.
Golden Slipper Tips & Verdict
While the pace should be helter-skelter, recent Golden Slipper winners have settled in the first half of the field and provided that he doesn’t get too far back, Stay Inside can catch those that he went down to in the Todman Stakes.
