Mackinnon Stakes Preview

The final Group 1 race of the Flemington carnival is the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) and there is $2 million in prizemoney on offer.

A stellar field of 10 have assembled, with form coming of the Group 1 races like the Cox Plate (2040m), Caulfield Cup (2400m), Kennedy Cantala (1600m), Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) and Livamol Classic (2040m).

The only two horses not to have raced at Group 1 level last start are Harlem (Group 3 Coongy Cup) and Skyward (Group 3 Geelong Cup).

Who has the strongest form?

The Kennedy Cantala rated strongest with Fifty Stars finishing 5th and going 15.2 lengths quicker than standard BM ahead of Mr Quickie in the same race rating three lengths below.

Empire Rose Stakes winner Shout The Bar rated next best going 12.2 lengths quicker than BM, while Cox Plate runners Mugatoo and Arcadia Queen rated just below that.

Dalasan, Harlem, Mirage Dancer and Skyward all rated well below the above performances, and they also have lower career best efforts and are suited over shorter or longer trips so I’m willing to risk this quartet.

Who will win the Mackinnon Stakes?

The Kiwi mare Melody Belle has unfinished business in this race having gotten a mile out of her ground last year before charging home to miss behind Magic Wand.

Last start, the Jamie Richards-trained daughter of Commands racked up her 12th Group 1 victory which puts her in ultra-elite class with only Tie The Knot (13), Sunline (13), Black Caviar (15) and Winx (25) having recorded more.

She loomed strongly on the bend in the Livamol Classic and really let down powerfully to defeat Avantage by 2.8 lengths.

She was up and down in distance last spring which didn’t look ideal, and this time in she seems to have had an ideal preparation for a $2 million 2000m race.

With prizemoney way down in NZ (Livamol Classic worth $239,000), there is no doubt the Mackinnon Stakes has been Melody Belle’s main mission all along.

Others have already had their grand finals in the Cox Plate or Caulfield Cup, and Melody Belle has the class and timing to win.

Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jye McNeil has picked up the ride and would love to continue the winning form at Flemington winning another rich feature.
