QE STAKES TIPS & PREVIEW 2020
The Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) is undoubtedly the showpiece event for Day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick.
Some of the best middle-distance horses in Australia and New Zealand line up as well as the highly rated Japanese galloper Danon Premium and UK raider Addeybb.
We all saw what Lys Gracieux did to the 2019 Cox Plate field – she simply brained them and was clearly in a class of her own as she scored from Castelvecchio and Te Akau Shark.
Danon Premium beat Lys Gracieux in the Group 1 Kinko Sho (2000m) by 1.3 lengths when carrying 1kg more, and that alone must be respected.
At his next start over 2000m, Danon Premium was runner-up to Japanese star Almond Eye, so there really is no doubting Danon Premium’s credentials over 2000m.
Similarly, Addeybb came to Australia having beaten Magic Wand who defeated Melody Belle in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).
Addeybb was also runner-up to star mare Magical who had defeated Magic Wand at her previous start while also finishing runner-up to the world’s highest rated horse Enable.
The form of the two overseas visitors is some of the strongest we’ve seen in Australia, and it’s hard to see anything beating this pair home.
WHO WILL WIN THE QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES?
I’m happy to side with Danon Premium after assessing his form as the strongest in the race.
The only query is how he will handle rain-affected ground when he’s never raced on anything other than Good to Firm going.
He’s by Deep Impact whose progeny generally handle Soft to Heavy tracks, and Danon Premium’s dam, Indiana Girl, was most effective on Soft ground in Ireland which is probably closer to Australian Heavy ground.
James McDonald takes the ride and jumps off Verry Elleegant who was ultra-impressive winning the Tancred Stakes (2400m) following her runner-up effort behind Addeybb.
All the form and indicators lead to Danon Premium, and if he let’s down on the likely Soft Randwick track, he’ll be winning.
