Looking for Queensland Oaks tips and best bets? We dissect times and form to find the winner of the 2021 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm.

The staying fillies get their chance at Group 1 glory in the Queensland Oaks and this year’s edition has attracted a field of 14.

Favourite in early markets with ladbrokes is the Doomben Roses (2000m) runner-up, Bargain, at the $4.80 quote, just ahead of the Australian Oaks (2400m) runner-up, Duais at $5. Grace And Harmony is a $6.50 chance, while Charms Star ($8), Only Words ($8) and Media Award ($9) are also prominent.

Bargain is one of 10 runners that come out of the Doomben Roses. Only Words took out that key lead up, sitting just off the speed before taking over in the straight to win by more than a length from Bargain.

In that race, the field were bunched as they approached the turn before the winner dashed clear to put enough of a break on the challengers.

The race didn’t rate through the roof with Only Words going just 2.9 lengths faster than standard benchmark. Bargain was a tiny bit flat footed at the top of the straight before producing the fastest last 200m.

The former Kiwi, Charms Star, worked home solidly for 3rd at what was her first run in Australia and off a nine week break. Easifar led them up and faded late in the piece to run 4th.

Signora Nera was held up for a brief period before landing in 5th position, beaten more than three lengths, while Grace And Harmony came from well back but was pushed out wide. She produced the fastest 800m-200m sectional before the tough run counted against late in the piece.

It is hard to make a case for some of the others that come out of the Doomben Roses. Splendiferous had some excuses as she was caught wide but needs to make up eight lengths. We can expect Bargain and Charms Star to be the improvers out to the 2200m.

While the Doomben Roses didn’t rate well, the form around Bargain does look ok as she had finished 3rd in the Australian Oaks at her start prior to that. The daughter of Ocean Park settled just behind the leaders that day at The Championships at Randwick and was briefly held up before getting out at the 300m and running on for 3rd behind Hungry Heart.

Duais produced the best late splits in the Oaks to fill the exacta and had earlier won the Adrian Knox Quality (2000m) at Randwick, again ahead of Bargain. The Edward Cummings-trained galloper went 8.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark that day.

Only Media Award has produced something slightly superior. The Chris Calthorpe-trained galloper from Geelong went 8.8 lengths faster than standard when taking out the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville a month ago

She represents the real x-factor for mine and might be a bit untapped. In the Australasian Oaks she came from well back and hooked out from the three-wide trail to defeat the 2020 Kennedy Oaks (2500m) winner, Personal. Media Award improved nine lengths on figures that day after graduating from a Geelong BenchMark 64 win over the 1700m.

The 2200m at Eagle Farm should give most runners their chance, unlike Doomben, which tends to favour those in the front half. Easifar might roll forward from the barrier, while Spendiferous is another potential leader. Bargain and Only Words shouldn’t be too far away, while Media Award and Duais are likely to be midfield or worse.

The ideal lead up form to the Oaks has been the Doomben Roses with 11 of the past 15 winners coming out of that race. Egg Tart claimed the Australasian Oaks/Queensland Oaks double in 2018. In 2019, Winning Ways, saluted after finishing 8th in the Doomben Roses. The Oaks wasn’t held last year.

Chris Waller has won three of the past five Queensland Oaks and takes six runners into the race this year, including Only Words.

Queensland Oaks Tips & Verdict

I am keen on Media Award (Best odds $9 with ladbrokes) to continue her run. The figures out of the Australasian Oaks hold up well in comparison to her rivals, while she should enjoy the wide expanses of Eagle Farm. She has performed on both Good on Soft tracks, while the barrier draw has been kind to her.
