Top 5 Randwick Guineas winners.
1. WEEKEND HUSSLER (2008)
The Ross McDonald-trained galloper had an amazing time of it in 2007 and 2008, winning race after race on his way to becoming the Australian Horse of the Year. He equalled Kingston Town’s record for most Group 1 wins in a single season. His Randwick Guineas triumph was one of eight wins as a three-year-old when he rose from a Cranbourne Maiden to take out seven Group 1 races on the trot. He took out the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and the Underwood Stakes (1800m) as a four-year-old before injury cut him down.
2. IT’S A DUNDEEL(2013)
The Murray Baker-trained New Zealander is one of few horses to claim the Triple Crown by taking out the Randwick Guineas (1600m), Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Australian Derby (2400m). He won the Derby by six lengths and came back to Randwick the following year when he took out the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m). He retired with over $5 million in prize money for connections.
3. THE AUTUMN SUN (2019)
The Autumn Sun had a short but stunning career, racing nine times and tasting defeat on just one occasion. The Chris Waller-trained galloper won the Golden Rose (1400m) and the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) as a spring three-year-old before taking out the Hobartville Stakes (1400m), Randwick Guineas (1600m) and Rosehill Guineas (2000m) en route to a stud career. His win in this race was extraordinary in that he came from a seemingly hopeless position to grab Fundamentalist in the last stride.
4. DISSIDENT (2014)
The Horse of the Year from 2015, Dissident scored an upset win for the Peter Moody stable in 2014 and was somewhat underrated, taking out a number of his races at generous odds. He won five times at the highest level with further success coming in Melbourne in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m), while he closed out his career with a win in the All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in 2015.
5. LE ROMAIN (2016)
Le Romain won just the seven races from 43 starts but three of those came at Group 1 level and he was runner-up to Winx in a further two at the highest level. His win in the 2016 edition of this race came ahead of the odds-on favourite, Press Statement.
