The unbeaten Kiwi galloper, Aegon, will be looking to make it six from six in Saturday’s Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) and has been installed the $2.40 favourite.

He was impressive winning the Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at his first run on Australian soil, but all his racing has been on Soft tracks and the son of Sacred Falls, who was a noted mudlark, now races on a Good-rated surface.

He may well be too good for them, but it is one box he is yet to tick, and you’re being asked to take short odds to find out if he’ll tick that box.

Aegon’s win in the Hobartville Stakes rated 4.7 lengths quicker than standard which doesn’t appear to be a strong figure.

However, his figure of 4.7 lengths quicker than standard rates above last year’s winner Shadow Hero’s lead up run and is identical to The Autumn Sun’s lead-up run before he won the Randwick Guineas.

There is one horse that looks a clear standout on figures, and I’d also be expecting a stack of second-up improvement as well as an improvement with blinkers on for the first time.

The Annabel Neasham-trained Mo’unga who was formerly with Chris Waller, looks to have returned in great order when finishing 3rd behind Tagaloa and Aysar in the CS Hayes Stakes (1400m).

The son of Savabeel improved with each of his four starts and resumed with a PB going 12.8 lengths quicker than standard.

He also boasts two strong performances when going 7.2 lengths quicker than standard to win the Dulcify Quality (1500m) at Rosehill before going 8.7 lengths quicker than standard when 7th in the Caulfield Guineas.

He got a bit lost at Caulfield and Damien Oliver had a hard time trying to keep him straight, and although his figures are strong from the race, I think he’s better than that and he showed it first-up this time in.

Tommy Berry takes the ride from gate 2 and Mo’unga should appreciate getting to Randwick for the first time where he will have plenty of room to move in the straight.

King’s Legacy also boasts a PB of 12.9 lengths quicker than standard, but he recorded that fourth-up and seems to improve deeper into his campaigns.

It’s hard to see him turning the tables on Aegon also.

North Pacific was runner-up to Aegon in the Hobartville and also gets blinkers for the first time which could see an improved effort.

Randwick Guineas Tips & Verdict

Aegon and North Pacific look the testing material out of the Hobartville Stakes which has been a great guide to the Randwick Guineas but I’m with Mo’unga.

His best form is on top of the ground, and if he improves out of the CS Hayes, I can’t see the others producing a figure needed to beat him.

Tommy Berry is arguably in career best form and will give him every chance from the good gate.
